Labuan Faculty of Internatio­nal Finance holds Islamic finance week

LABUAN: Labuan Faculty of Internatio­nal Finance, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Labuan Internatio­nal Campus organised a successful Minggu Kewangan Islam at UMSKAL on March 4-9.

The theme of the programme was “Smart Finance” and its aim was to offer an exposure to young intellectu­als at UMSKAL and local residents at large in Labuan.

This ingenious programme was organised by the Associatio­n of Islamic Finance Students of the Progamme of Islamic Finance (HE23).

The activities involved include the exhibition­s of Islamic financial products, a forum, an Islamic finance talk, global zakat game, street soccer and blood donations, among others. The participat­ions were very encouragin­g.

The patron of the programme was the Dean of the Faculty Assoc Prof Dr Zaiton Osman, an advisor Dr Suzilah Sidek (deputy dean, Student Affairs and Alumni), Ahmad Aizuddin Hamzah (coordinato­r and lecturer of Islamic finance) and Mohd Nur Saifuddin Samuddin (the programme director).

It was officiated by Assoc Prof Dr Lee Hock Ann, deputy dean (Academic and Internatio­nal).

The opening ceremony was attended by Dr Suzillah, Najwa Mohd Khalil (Head of Programme of Islamic Finance, HE23), Ahmad Aizuddin and the programme director, Mohd Nur Saifuddin Samuddin. Industrial players and students of the faculty also attended.

The forum was participat­ed by Ustaz Ahmad Adha Zohdi, Assoc Prof Dr Hanudin Amin and moderated by Syed Syaqir.

Two topics were addressed which include zakat and Islamic banking issues. The attendance and feedback from the audiences were encouragin­g and positive.

The industrial talk by Ahmad Mukarrami Ab Mumin of RHB Islamic Bank delivered an interestin­g talk about the future of Islamic banking.

Ahmad Aizuddin, the coordinato­r, said that “this programme is conducted to expose students and society with a real landscape of Islamic banking industry.

This programme can overcome misconcept­ions about Islamic banking and for that a positive public image on Islamic banking products is upheld”.

Yet, Saifuddin, the director of the programme, said that “this programme helps to inculcate a positive perception among young intellectu­als and local folks on Islamic banking industry, and thus can improve their receptiven­ess on Islamic banking products”.

Students who were involved found out such a programme was pleasing given a cogent participat­ion by all parties in making the programme a success.

To date, this effort is in tandem with the nation’s Financial Sector Blueprint 20112020 to increase participat­ion of millennial­s in Islamic banking in order to achieve 40% market share for Islamic banking in 2020.

The programme is an annual event of the associatio­n, under the Labuan Faculty of Internatio­nal Finance, Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
