Staff shortage does not affect performance of Sabah police
KOTA KINABALU: Staff shortage has not affected the performance of police in Sabah.
Although the Sabah police contingent is facing a nine per cent staff shortage, Sabah deputy commissioner of police Datuk Zaini Jass said they were in high spirits and eager to serve.
Speaking to the press during a working visit to the Kota Kinabalu district police headquarters (IPD KK), Zaini said he was happy to report on the performance of police in four other districts he visited previously, which were Keningau, Tenom, Kunak and Ranau.
“In summary, all personnel were high in morale and spirits to serve in their respective districts. Although there is a shortage of officers, it is not critical and it is no reason for a district not to perform.
“On our part, we will look into ways to best overcome logistic issues. Nonetheless, it does not affect performance or task,” he said.
Since assuming his post in November 2018, this was Zaini’s first round of working visits to police headquarters statewide. He said it was a tradition to get to know officers and personnel in each district, as well as issues they might face.
The visits were also to ensure tasks were carried out smoothly and efficiently throughout Sabah, as well as address other issues such as staff shortage and infrastructure.
Zaini assured the Sabah police contingent would give priority to critical needs and channel assistance accordingly. This was to stimulate a conducive working environment for the comfort of personnel, which would translate to better service for the people, he said.
“We look at office facilities, housing and other infrastructure. All of that need to be budgeted and we do so accordingly, monitor and evaluate which is of higher priority.
“For now, we have begun identifying districts which need more attention in terms of police station facilities, not only to improve our performance but also for the convenience of the people,” he added.
