Adopted villages almost crime free, say police

- By Elton Gomes

KOTA KINABALU: The adopted village or’Kampung Angkat’ program, a strategy by the Sabah police to curb criminal activities, has produced encouraging results with several villages being almost free from any criminal activities.

One such village is Kg Cenderakasi, located behind Metro Town, which is under the Luyang police supervision.

According to city police chief ACP Habibi Majinji, Kg Cenderakasi is close to being free from criminal and drug activities.

“The crime rate at Kg Cenderakasi has dropped since the Kampung Angkat program was launched early this year.

“This was also made possible by ongoing integrated operations with other government agencies in fighting drugs and other related criminal activities in Kg Cenderakasi,” he said.

Habibi also said that the crime rate in Luyang had decreased for the past three years thanks to the ongoing working relationship shown by the community with the police.

“The crime rate in Luyang has seen a reduction of 12 cases or 32.8 percent for the first three months of this year as compared to the same period last year.

“Such achievement can only be attained through good working relationship with the Luyang community and the police in keeping Luyang and its surrounding free from unhealthy activities,” he said during the motorcycle convoy event in conjunction with the 212th Police Day celebration at the Luyang police station yesterday.

The event first kicked off at the Karamunsing police station before Habibi and his officers made their first stop at the Manggatal police station before ending the event at the Luyang police station.

Two other villages - Kg Lokub and Kg Telipok - in Manggatal have also been chosen as Kampung Angkat by the Kota Kinabalu Police Contingent (IPD KK).

Habibi said both villages were known as one of several hotspot areas in Kota Kinabalu and through the Kampung Angkat program, and the police were optimistic that both villages can soon be categorised as crime free.

Among those present during the events were deputy city police chief Superintendent George Abdul Rakman, Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division chief DSP Kalsom Idris, Manggatal police chief Sub-Inspector Sukumaran A/L Batumalai, Luyang police chief Sub-Inspector Abdul Samad Hj Sumadi and other police officers.
