Coastal erosion works, drainage projects being planned in Labuan
LABUAN: The Labuan Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) has received a RM20 million allocation under the 11th Malaysia Plan for coastal erosion works and improvements of irrigation infrastructure.
Labuan MP Datuk Rozman Isli said the DID was committed to infrastructure improvements on the island for the benefit of the people.
“Under the DID development budget, RM14 million will be spent to solve problems of erosion through coastal protection works at Sg Miri/Sg Pagar, RM800, 000 for house pump construction works at the waterfront while the remaining will be for drainage and irrigation infrastructure maintenance works,” he told reporters after a briefing for Labuan Corporation Advisory Council members at the DID here yesterday.
Also present were advisory council members Simsudin Sidek, Noor Halim Zaini and Dr Ramli Tahir.
Rozman added that the issue over flash floods at Rancha-Rancha Darat would soon be resolved with the construction of a drainage pumping station, floodgate and flow pumps with a RM4.5 million allocation.
“This village had been hit by floods since the nearby area was developed as an industrial estate.
“Efforts to resolve the problem such as the construction of culverts to drain out excess water had been carried out but the flash floods still persist each time there is a heavy downfall,” he said.
