Cervical cancer screening for 1,500 Sabah women

- By Shalina R.

KOTA KINABALU: About 1,500 women are expected to undergo the cervical cancer screening, HPV DNA, through the Sabah level Women’s Wellness or Nur Sejahtera Program this year.

The program, organized by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), is aimed at increasing the number of women taking the pap smear in Sabah.

“The Fifth Malaysia Population and Family Survey (KPKM-5, 2014) conducted by LPPKN found that only 51% of women in Sabah had undergone a pap smear test and the number was moderate,” said LPPKN director general Abdul Shukur Abdullah during the Sabah Level Nur Sejahtera launch at the Urban Transformation Centre here yesterday.

Sabah is the first state to implement the Nursejahtera program after it was approved last January.

Among the requirements for women to undergo the screening are Malaysians and permanent residents, aged 25 to 65, married or have been married, and must be in the B40 and M40 groups.

All eligible women can go directly to any nearby Nur Sejahtera Clinic to register.

The program took place at the UTC Karamunsing, attended by over 300 visitors.

The Mobile Family Center services also conducted activities like health screening, cervical cancer talks, MamaCare massage services and youthful interactive KafeTEEN.

The opening ceremony was also attended by Suzanna Piny, Sabah LPPKN acting director and Clementina Ajik, Sabah General Services Department deputy director.
