Tighter security at sensitive locations

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman will increase security at sensitive locations nationwide, including places of worship, following the terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, says Deputy Comm Datuk Ayob Khan.

The Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division head said such an increase in security and monitoring was needed to ensure that such locations do not become targets for militants.

“The Counter Terrorism Division has reminded all police district headquarters as well as state contingents to increase security, especially at places of worship.

“Intelligence obtained showed that racial and religious issues are also being exploited by terrorist groups in order to launch attacks.

On Friday, terrorist attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand left at least 49 people dead and more than 40 people seriously injured.

New Zealand police said 49 people were killed and 42 were being treated for wounds, including a four-year-old child. Three people were in custody including one man who has been charged with murder, police said.

The culprits targeted the central Al Noor Mosque and a smaller mosque in the suburb of Linwood in Christchurch.

On another matter, a total of 1,151 police reports have been lodged in connection with insults on religions since Feb 17, DCP Ayob said.

“The majority of the reports lodged were regarding insults on Islam while 13 reports were lodged in connection with insults on other religions.

“A total of 25 investigation papers have been opened based on the reports lodged,” he said.
