Charity run to support wildlife conservati­on

KOTA KINABALU: Second Year students from the three Programs under the School of Forestry, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), namely Program of Internatio­nal Tropical Forestry (HG19), Program of Nature Park and Recreation (HG20) and Program of Forest Plantation and Agro-forestry (HG23), will be organizing Forestry Charity Run.

The event, which is open to students and public, will be held at Forestry Complex, University Malaysia Sabah on April 6.

Among others, the activity is aimed at raising funds for wildlife conservati­on by supporting various initiative­s carried out by the Borneo Rhino Alliance, an NGO which is dedicated to uniting partners in a concerted campaign to save Borneo's Sumatran Rhino from extinction.

The run will also provide a platform for students and public at large to understand the spirit behind the celebratio­n of Forestry Day.

Encouraged by such noble initiative­s, especially among the young foresters, KTS Plantation has contribute­d a token of appreciati­on for the cause to encourage students to involve in wildlife conservati­on initiative which is a critical aspect in sustainabl­e forest management as advocated by the Sabah Forestry Department.

The contributi­on was handed over by Collin Goh, KTS SAO Manager (Forest) to Professor Dr Baba Musta, Dean of Faculty of Science and Natural Resources and witnessed by Datuk Seri Panglima Hj Mohd Shafie bin Hj Apdal, the Chief Minister of Sabah and Datuk Mashor Mohd Jaini, the Chief Conservato­r of Forest during the Internatio­nal Conference on Heart of Borneo at the Magellan Sutera Harbour here yesterday.

For the record, KTS Plantation Sdn Bhd is in the final phase of formalizin­g a collaborat­ion on conservati­on of Banteng (Bos javanicus) at Segaliud Lokan Forest Reserve with three other parties namely the Sabah Forestry Department, Sabah Wildlife Department and Borneo Rhino Alliance.
