LAHAD DATU: Police have detained a man, believed to be drug addict, for allegedly slapping his wife and threatening to hack her with an axe.

District police chief ACP Nasri Mansor said the 26-yearold suspect was arrested at an unnumbered house in Kampung Sepagaya Hilir on Monday after his wife, a teacher, lodged a police report.

Nasri said initial investigation found that at about 6pm on March 22, the suspect called his wife to a storeroom under their house at Kampung Sapagaya Hilir and asked her about a car he had wanted to buy.

The victim later explained that she could not afford to buy the car due to insufficient loan.

The suspect became furious when she turned down his request and slapped her, Nasri said, adding that the suspect took an axe and threatened to slash his wife and set fire to their house.

Fearing for her safety, the victim promised to buy him the car before fleeing with her children to her sibling’s house about 11.54pm on March 22, he said.

According to Nasri, further investigation revealed that the suspect and the victim married in February 2018 and it was the victim’s third marriage.

The victim has two children from her previous marriages.

Nasri said the victim was previously assaulted by the suspect but did not lodge any police report.

“Following the arrest of the suspect, we also seized an axe believed to be used by the suspect during the incident,” he said.

The suspect has also tested positive for drug abuse and currently in police custody for further investigation under Section 323 and 506 of the Penal Code, he added.
