TENOM: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew said she spotted the potential for tourism development while travelling along the scenic Padas River on her maiden four-hour train ride to the interior on Tuesday.

She took a 132-km rail ride from Kota Kinabalu to Tenom at the invitation of Minister of Infrastructure Development Datuk Peter Anthony.

"It is a matter of upgrading the existing railway tracks, especially the stretch from Beaufort to Tenom, among other aspects.

"We are also concerned about public safety. In this respect, my ministry looks forward to working with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development," said Christina, who is also Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, when met by reporters after the trip.

It is understood that improvement works will involve the 26-km stretch from the Halogilat Railway Station to the Tenom Railway Station.

Peter, who is also Melalap Assemblyman, said he had met with foreign investors who were interested in developing the Sabah railway system.

"Once I have received their formal proposal, I will bring it to the attention of the State Government," he said.

The duo were accompanied by the Director of the State Railway Department, Leonard Puyong and Director of the State Museum Department, Arif Jasmer Hamid.
