RM9.5 million worth of syabu seized

JOHOR BAHRU: In less than a week, another international drug trafficking case has been uncovered in Johor following the seizure of 190 kilogrammes of suspected syabu (crystal methamphetamine) worth RM9.5 million in Iskandar Puteri.

The drugs hidden inside tea packets was seized in a raid on a Toyota Vellfire vehicle at about 1.30 pm on March 25.

Johor police chief Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd said the raid was carried out based on information from four local men, aged between 35 and 48 years, who were arrested on March 19 .

“No other items were seized in the raid, but the latest case is related to the previous case in which we seized 2.06 tonnes of drugs believed to be syabu in Ulu Tiram on March 19.

“This is because their modus operandi was similar. Besides, we believe, Johor is being used as a transit point for the drugs before being distributed to neighbouring countries,” he told reporters here yesterday.

According to him, the syndicate's tendency to use Johor as a transit point for the drugs before being distributed to other countries has been on the rise of late, but the situation is still under control.

Last Tuesday, police, the Customs and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency had seized 2.06 tonnes of suspected syabu worth RM103.2 million in a joint operation, detaining six members of an international drug syndicate in Ulu Tiram, here.

Bukit Aman Narcotic Crime Investigations Department director Datuk Seri Mohamad Salleh said the seizure was the biggest drug haul in Malaysia so far. - Bernama
