CM, state ministers pay last respects to Wong

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah ministers led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Shafie Apdal paid their last respects to the late Datuk Stephen Wong Tien Fatt here yesterday afternoon.

Among the ministers present at the Fook Lu Siew funeral parlour were Minister of Infrastruc­ture Developmen­t Datuk Peter Anthony, Minister of Law and Native Affairs Datuk Aidi Mokhtar, Minister of Education and Innovation Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob and Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Frankie Poon.

The Chief Minister spent more than an hour with the bereaved family and comforting the widow, Datin Chong Mee Fook.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew and Rural Developmen­t Minister Datuk Ewon Benedict also paid their last respects to Wong at the Wisma Fook Lu Siew Funeral Parlour.

Parti Bersatu Sabah president and Kota Marudu MP Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Ongkili and other leaders of the party, former state Special Tasks Minister Datuk Teo Chee Kang, former state Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environmen­t Datuk Pang Yuk Ming, Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Nordin Sima, Sabah Rubber Industry Board (LIGS) chairman Datuk John Ot Ghani and United Sabah Chinese Community Associatio­n of Kota Kinabalu president Datuk Susan Wong were among those paying thirr last respects to Wong yesterday.

Besides his wife, Wong also leaves behind three daughters, a son and two grandchild­ren.

Wong will be laid to rest in his hometown, Sandakan at the Sandakan Christian Burial Ground at Mile 12 Labuk Road on Monday, April 1.

His body will be flown to Sandakan from Kota Kinabalu today, March 30 and a two-day wake service will be held at the San Fook Hing Funeral Parlour.

The two-term Sandakan MP and Sabah DAP chairman was the state Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister.

He passed away on Thursday, March 28, aged 65, after taking part in a hike at the Tambaig Adventure Park at Kg Duvanson, Putatan.
