PH's M'sian Future Leaders School program ‘an impetuous decision'

-

KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party's Central New Generation Movement chief, Eric Lau has described the PH government's implementation of a new programme called Malaysian Future Leaders School (MFLS) as an impetuous decision.

He agreed that the young generation should be given training like the previous National Service Training Programme (PLKN) to enhance their leadership qualities and selfdiciplines but at the age of 15 and 17, it is not the right time.

At that age, it is too young to identify a future leader.

“Academic performance can never be the only justification to identify potential future leaders. When you are doing very well in your academic, it doesn't mean that you are going to be a capable leader. Furthermore, such training may even affect their academic performances as they will have to focus on both the programme and also school activities,” said Lau.

“As initially planned, the government will only select 200 out of the 20,000 to 30,000 students.

“I think the handpick will end up unfair to the other students as some may be more determined and capable but did not do well in their school curriculum,” added Lau.

Such programmes and training should be targetting on young graduates who have at least completed college or university studies, and also members of various non-governmental organisations.

The government should work closely with these channels to identify the potential candidates, as these group of people are more ready to be trained.

He sia d it is a good move to utilise the facilities left over from the scrapped PLKN, but the government should be taking more time to study on this programme to make sure it is effective and long-term, or else it will end up like the PLKN done by previous administration which resulted in a waste of resources.
