Man jailed, caned for stabbing shop owner

KOTA KINABALU: A 40-year-old man was sentenced to 24 months’ jail plus two strokes of the cane by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for stabbing a coffee shop owner in the stomach with a knife.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie imposed the sentence on Aaron Stanley Johnsiy Jokinol after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code.

The charge carries a jail term of up to 10 years or a fine or with whipping or with any two of such punishment­s, upon conviction.

Aaron admitted to voluntaril­y causing hurt, which could result in death to one Chong Wui Hyen, 43, at a coffee shop in Penampang on March 24.

Based on the facts of the case, a police personnel on duty at the Penampang police station received a call on March 24 at 6.22pm regarding a man, later known as the accused, having stabbed a man in the stomach at a coffee shop in Penampang.

The police went to the coffee shop and found the victim laying in front of the shop with injury on the stomach, and the accused was also in the shop as he had been apprehende­d by witnesses.

An investigat­ion revealed that the accused, who was a customer at the victim’s coffee shop, was drunk and had become dissatisfi­ed with the victim for talking boastfully, thereby inflicting injury on the victim with the knife.

Further investigat­ion revealed that the accused had thrown the knife into the bushes near the shop but was found by the police.

The victim suffered a two centimeter-wide cut on his stomach and is currently being treated at a hospital here.
