Fatin-led women's compound archery team hit bull's eye in Bangkok

KUALA LUMPUR: The national women's compound archery team struck gold in the Asia Cup Stage One in Bangkok, Thailand yesterday.

The trio of Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh, Halim Nur Aina Yasmine and Nurul Syazhera Mohd Asmi scored a slim 230-226 win over India's Priya Gurjar, Muskan Kirar and Sanchita Tiwari in the final at the Hua Mark Archery Field, according to the Asian Archery Federation website www.asianarchery.com.

Kazakhstan defeated Bangladesh 229-220 for the bronze medal.

Fatin failed to make it a double joy for Malaysia when she went down fighting 142-147 to Muskan Kirar in the individual final.

Singapore's Contessa Loh Tze Chieh, who lost to Fatin in the semi-finals Thursday, bagged the bronze medal when she edged Iran's Halimianavval Seyedeh-Vida 145140.

Fatin had worse luck in the mixed compound event when she and Syahrizan Jafar could only finish fourth after losing 149-151 to India's Muskan Kirar-Siddhant Gupta in the fight for the bronze medal.

The Iranian combination of Seyedeh-Vida Halimianavval-Mohammadsaleh Palizban pipped Indonesians Sri Ranti-Prima Wisnu Wardhana 156-154 to the gold medal.

The national men's compound team failed to emulate their women counterparts when they finished fourth after losing by just one point in the score of 230231 to Kazakhstan, represented by brothers Rastam and Akbarali Karabayev as well as Sergey Khristich.

India won the gold medal after beating Iran 233-230.

No Malaysian made the men's compound individual final after crashing out in the quarter-finals yesterday.
