Parents praise Malcolm Mejin for encouraging kids to read and write

-

KUCHING: Local author Malcolm Mejin received praises from parents and the public during his book signing at MPH Bookstore, Mid Valley Megamall on Saturday.

They asked him where he got his inspiration to write the novel, Diary of a Rich Kid.

“The truth is, I really don’t know. I have ideas in my head, and I can’t wait to write them down. It could be part of my life experiences. Whatever it is, it’s a God-given talent, so I’m grateful for that.”

Some parents, who attended the book signing, have children who love to read, and said that the meet-and-greet was a good platform to expose children to local authors and to help them acquire the love of reading and writing.

There were parents who also raised the issue of children spending more time online playing games than reading books.

“I think it’s good to have a balance between playing games and reading,” Malcolm said.

“There’s nothing wrong with playing games. We need to let ourselves go and have a little fun once in a while.”

Malcolm said he loved doing the book signings.

“It gives me a chance to meet people from all walks of life, to learn about them as they also learn about me. Sometimes, they have interesting and unique stories to share with me. That’s kind of cool.”

Malcolm proofread and edited the entire novel himself, which took him three months to complete.

Malcolm has also given a talk recently at Excelsior International School in Johor Bahru, where he encouraged young people to pursue their passion, and never to give up on their dreams in the face of daunting challenges.

He also said that he was currently working on a second novel for the Diary of a Rich Kid series, due to good response to the novel.

“I also have another secret to share,” Malcolm said amusingly.

“I’m also working on another novel, which is entirely different than Diary of a Rich Kid. But at the moment, I will keep a tight lid on it and reveal more when the time is right.”

Malcolm is scheduled for an upcoming book signing at Popular Bookstore at IPC Shopping Centre on April 20, 2pm-3pm.
