KOTA KINABALU: The winner of the Mount Kinabalu Strongestman Open Challenge will be crowned in conjunction with the Ranau district level Kaamatan Festival on May 3-4.

To be held for the first time in the district, the Ranau MP Office will organise the Challenge and coordinated by Borneo Extreme Events in association with Radio Atukoi FM at the Ranau Community Hall compound.

Tournament coordinator Roger Frederick said registration remained open and that he expected around 25 strength athletes in the two-day Challenge.

“I’m pretty sure the Challenge will be among the highlights along with the usual events during Kaamatan Festival such as Unduk Ngadau and Sugandoi contests.

“Apart from that, it is also the first time the Challenge will be held in Ranau.

“We are very thankful to the Ranau MP Office especially its Member of Parliament Jonathan Yasin for his strong support for the event,” Roger said here yesterday.

Roger added the Challenge could see athletes from around the State as well as Labuan, Sarawak, Peninsular Malaysia and Brunei staking their claim for the title.

“The Challenge however is only opened in the men’s category weighing 95kg and below,” said Roger.

The stength athletes will compete in various challenges including Atlas Stone, Farmers Walk, Yoke Walk, Tyre Flip, Car Deadlift, Log Press, Truck Pull, Giant Dumbbell, Hercules Holds and Hercules Hug.

“The event will take place over two days starting 9am until 5pm. We welcome entries from among the younger generation, especially from around Ranau,” he added.

Jonathan, on the other hand, welcomed such event as it could add much prestige and excitement to the Kaamatan Festival, thus helping to boost the tourism industry in Ranau with expected entries from outside of Sabah.

Meanwhile, the winner of the Challenge will receive RM2,000 followed by RM1,500 and RM1,000 for the second and third placing respectively.

The fourth to eighth placing will take home RM400, RM500, RM400, RM300 and RM200.

The top three winners too will receive a trophy and cerficate while those from fourth to eighth placing will get medal and certificate.
