Wife of late Sandakan MP receives award

SANDAKAN: Wife of the late Datuk Stephen Wong Tien Fatt, Datin Florence Chong Mee Fook, was chosen to receive the ‘Tokoh Guru' award during the Sandakan District Teachers Day and Excellent Service Award ceremony held at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tiong Hua here yesterday.

Chong, who was a former headmistre­ss of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sung Siew, was present to receive the award from Youth and Sports Minister cum Tanjong Papat assemblyma­n Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung.

Chong had been teaching from 1977 until 2015, where she had taught at SM St Mary, SK St Mary Labuk and SK Sung Siew, and was also once a supervisor at the Sandakan District Education Office.

Among Chong's many achievemen­ts were: Excellent Headmaster/Headmistre­ss Award (district level) in 2011, Excellent Co-curricular Award for Primary School (state level) in 2012, Excellent Co-curricular Award for Primary School (national level) in 2013, ‘Wira Harapan Serasi' (state-level) in 2013 and Ikon Penglibata­n Ibu Bapa dan Komuniti (state-level) in 2015.

According to the organising committee of the ceremony, the committee had originally planned for the late Wong as the Minister of Health and People's Wellbeing, cum Sandakan MP, to grace the ceremony and present the award to his wife.

Wong had allocated an extra RM20,000 for the ceremony, which would make the ceremony ‘more grand' than the previous years.

Meanwhile, a total of 117 teachers from primary and secondary schools as well as vocational college received excellent service awards.

Also present were Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC) president Datuk Peter Hii Chang Lik; Sandakan District Education officer Sharif Mahada Sharif Attar as well as Elopura assemblyma­n Calvin Chong Ket Kiun, who was represente­d by Elopura's community developmen­t leader Jason Pang.
