Kara Wai wasn’t confident of winning for role in ‘Tracey’

HONG KONG: Veteran actress Kara Wai has admitted that she wasn’t confident of winning the Best Supporting Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA).

Kara, 59, has been very cautious after going through depression and a suicide attempt the age of 40.

This was unexpected, because she had started very strongly in showbiz, having won the first HKFA Best Actress award in 1982.

On how she felt in the runup to this year’s awards presentati­on, Kara said: “I do have confidence in myself, but the award depends on the critics’ taste.”

She has her reasons for lacking confidence. Years ago, she thought she had performed well in A Chinese Ghost Story. But she went home emptyhande­d during awards night.

In Tracey, the portrays a housewife who goes through an emotional roller coaster ride after finding out that her husband is a transgende­r.

On her filming experience, Kara recalled that one scene in the movie stood out in particular: when she confronted Philip Keung, who plays her husband, after he came out as transgende­r.

On her character, Kara said: “She is someone who needs respect and needs to keep up her façade. She is someone who would rather stay with her husband and pretend that they’re a normal family.”

Kara used her own personal experience as a dancer to flesh out her character, “I understand the importance of creating the perfect performanc­e and how to successful­ly keep the audience’s attention.”

Her strong attachment to the character won her the accolade.
