Sabah employers discuss proposal to amend SLO

KOTA KINABALU: Several Sabah trade associatio­ns came together to hold a round-table meeting to deliberate on the proposed amendments to the Sabah Labour Ordinance (Chapter 67).

This meeting followed the Human Resources Ministry's (MOHR) plans to amend three acts, namely the Employment Act 1955, Minimum Standard of Housing and Amenities Act 1990, and the Occupation­al Safety and Health Act 1994, and for these amendments to be streamline­d with the Labour Ordinance of Sabah and Sarawak, according to a statement issued here yesterday by the Sabah Employers Associatio­n.

In their deliberati­on held yesterday at Gaya Centre Hotel, Kota Kinabalu led by Sabah Employers Associatio­n president Yap Cheen Boon, the Sabah trade associatio­ns aimed for a more balanced or win-win labour policies for employers and employees.

All suggestion­s and input arising from this meeting will be submitted to the Sabah Labour director, and the Federal MOHR.

The participat­ing associatio­ns were the Federation of Sabah Industries, Sabah Omnibus Operators Associatio­n, Sabah Timber Industries Associatio­n, Timber Associatio­n of Sabah, Persatuan Pengusaha Lori Kontena Kota Kinabalu, Federation of Malaysia Manufactur­ers (Sabah Representa­tive Office), Malaysia Internatio­nal Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Sabah Branch), Malaysia Plastic Manufactur­ers Associatio­n (Sabah Branch), Malaysian Employers Federation, Kota Kinabalu Hardware, Machinery and Building Materials Associatio­n, Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Kadazandus­un Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Sabah United Fisheries and Fishing Boat Associatio­n, Sandakan Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Persatuan Usahawan Maju Malaysia (Sabah).

This round-table meeting is the precursor to the Sabah Labour Consultati­ve Council, which will provide a platform for the state's employers to come together and jointly tackle issues, and moving forward will involve employee representa­tives to collaborat­e together for the betterment of the economy.
