Dr Mahathir prepared to meet police over IPCMC

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he is prepared to meet with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) over the proposed Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).

He said the government will listen to the views of all parties concerned before making a decision on the setting-up of the commission.

“I will meet everyone, even with you, I will meet,” he told reporters at a press conference held after the launch of the Commodities Global Trade Sdn Bhd e-commerce platform here yesterday.

On the protests against the setting-up of the commission, Dr Mahathir said there would be some parties who agree and some who do not.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun was reported yesterday as saying the PDRM would meet with the Prime Minister to submit its protest over several issues connected to the setting-up of the IPCMC.

Mohamad Fuzi who retires today (May 3) said among the issues was withdrawing the authority of the Police Force Commission (SPP) under Article 140 of the Federal Constitution which has drawn protests from many parties in PDRM.

Article 140 of the Federal Constitution states that the SPP which includes the Home Minister would be responsible for the appointment, promotion and all issues pertaining to the discipline of police officers.

Petaling Jaya Member of Parliament Maria Chin Abdullah had previously been reported as urging the government to set a timeline for the setting up of the IPCMC and steps which will be taken to ensure it is truly independent and had the authority to resolve problems in the lawenforcement agency.

On April 4, Dr Mahathir said the IPCMC was free to carry out investigations on the enforcement agency and the government would not interfere.
