Woman demanding rent-to-own scheme interrupts Pua’s speech

- By Rebecca Chong

SANDAKAN: Democratic Action Party (DAP) publicity secretary Tony Pua was interrupted in the middle of his speech before some 400 attendees during a campaign talk organised by DAP at Taman Harmoni People’s Housing Project (PPR), Mile 3, here, Friday night.

As Pua was speaking, an elderly woman suddenly stood up in the crowd and started shouting at Pua.

“Keep your promises! We want rent-to-own scheme,” she shouted.

The woman, Norbayan Tanong, is one of the residents in Taman Harmoni.

She later told reporters that she was only reminding DAP of its promises in the last election.

“They (DAP) promised us that PPR will be made into rent-toown scheme so that we could (in the future) own the house that we are staying in. We voted for DAP, so what happens to their promise?” she demanded to know.

Norbayan said she has 13 children and only two had finished school and are working.

“My husband is not working. So how are we going to survive? I have to pay the bills and the rent, which could reach up to RM300.

“I have not received any form of financial assistance from the Government now. I have updated my Bantuan Sara Hidup (BSH) information in the system but I still have not received a single cent,” she claimed.

Norbayan also said that there are other families who suffer the same fate as her.

The woman was not able to finish what she said to Pua and was invited to go further away from the stage for a further discussion with DAP Sabah Publicity secretary, Ginger Phoong Jin Zhe.

Phoong said that he would ensure that DAP representatives would visit her and her family at their home in the nearest time possible.
