Neighbourh­ood Watch right platform to curb social problems — MP

PUTATAN : Rukun Tetangga (Neighbourh­ood Watch) is now seen as a platform to transform the economy and curb escalating social problems.

Putatan Member of Parliament Awang Husaini Datuk Sahari said active and aggressive move should be taken to demonstrat­e that Rukun Tetangga remained relevant in today’s time.

“KRT (Rukun Tetangga Carnival) can be a small ambassador in introducin­g the local products and the attitude of the community living in a harmonious environmen­t and being polite to one another,” Awang Husaini said.

He said he was informed that the State National Integratio­n and Unity Department had implemente­d nine programs under the outcome-based budget.

They are Skuad Unity, RT Economy Project, RT Innovation Project, Loving Community Project, SRS Awareness Safety Campaign Program, Crime Prevention Program, Women Neighbourh­ood Elite Squad (Sejiwa) and Young Neighbourh­ood Innovative Team.

“KRT assists in the developmen­t of Sabah in various angles. With this many numbers (of RT), I will consider a special fund for the excellent KRT which has a great vision of highlighti­ng products and programs to promote the well-being of life,” he added in a speech delivered by his special task officer Awangku Iskandar Sarizan Awang Sari, during the launching program of Karnival Perpaduan Rukun Tetangga at the People Housing Project (PPR) multipurpo­se hall in Taman Seri Keramat, Ketiau here yesterday.

Apart from that, he also informed that currently, there are 1,053 KRT in all over Sabah with 11 of them in Putatan and 17 in Penampang.

Meanwhile, director of the State National Integratio­n and Unity Department, Delin Liet Blaun, said the objective of the program yesterday was to enrich and strengthen unity among the people.

She also highlighte­d that people under RT worked voluntaril­y without being paid just for the sake of bringing the community together.

Delin also thanked Awang Husaini for giving some funds to help the carnival to become a successful event and hoped that such an event would continue to be held in the future.

During the program, Rukun Tetangga around Putatan and Penampang area put up exhibition booths displaying their community products while outside the hall, various booths were selling delicacies to visitors.
