5,000 celebrate Kaamatan in Kota Belud

-

A crowd of over 5,000 enlivened the Kota Belud district level Kaamatan celebration at Dewan Tun Said here recently.

The celebration was organised by the State government with cooperation from the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Kota Belud, and officiated by Rural Development Minister cum Kadamaian assemblyman Datuk Ewon Benedick.

In his opening address, Ewon said Kaamatan and other cultural celebrations were a way to strengthen unity among a multiracial and multi-religious society.

“Kaamatan is not only celebrated by the Kadazandusun Murut community, but also other races and ethnic groups, strengthening bonds and cultural understanding as the backbone of advancement and peace in our community.

“Tadau Kaamatan gives a chance to the people of Sabah, including tourists, to understand, know and appreciate the culture and customs of tribes in Sabah. That said, let us reflect on the message behind this year’s Kaamatan theme, ‘Kaamatan Wadah Perpaduan Budaya Bangsa,’” said Ewon.

He hoped the celebration would continue to not only maintain the bond within the Sabahan community, but also preserve cultural heritage.

He wished to see more successes and achievements in following years, encouraging people to work together towards that goal.

In conjunction with the celebration, more than 20 exhibition and sales booths were set up by various departments and agencies, including the Ministry of Rural Development, Fama, Agricultural Department, Consumers Association of Sabah, Kadamaian Travel Association (KATA) and KDCA.

The Kaamatan celebration was made livelier with cultural performances, namely traditional dances from the Dusun Kota Belud tribe and other ethnic groups.

The highlight was the Unduk Ngadau competition, featuring 15 contestants.
