Single mother hopes for hearingimpaired son to learn baking

The mother of a hearingimpaired teen is hoping for her son to learn basic baking skills in order to prepare him to be independent.

Magdalene Wong, 45, says she is currently seeking those who can help teach her son Joshua Kong, 17, how to bake as a prelude to entering the workforce.

“I want him to learn how to bake, which will stand him in good stead when he wants to start earning a living,” the single mother told The Borneo Post, adding Joshua has already completed his Form 5 education and is currently learning to play the piano.

According to Wong, who is an insurance agent, her son studied at SMK Rosli Dhoby as it was the only school that offered a class using sign language.

She said even though Joshua had recently passed his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations, his results were ‘not very impressive'.

“Of course, I did not expect him to excel academically. I just want him to gain self-confidence and selfdiscipline,” she said, adding Joshua is now more conversant with sign language.

Despite her son not being able to read or write, Wong believes he would have no difficulty in picking up certain skills.

Meanwhile, Wong disclosed that both she and Joshua are currently facing another more pressing problem – finding a new home.

She said she had recently been issued an eviction letter from the management of the apartment where the two of them had been staying for the past 15 years.

“We have been told to move out at the end of this month because they said Joshua has been a nuisance to neighbours.”

Wong said the nature of her job meant that she had to leave home to meet clients and, at time, be at the office.

“I can't bring Joshua to the office, and I do not want to place him at the Agape Centre as some friends have suggested,” she said.
