China Consul General special guest of dragon boat race
KOTA KINABALU: Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu, Liang Caide, will be attending the sunset beach party and opening ceremony of the sixth Sabah FCAS International Dragon Boat Race 2019 as a special guest on June 14 and 16 respectively.
The organizer, Federation of the Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS), has also invited Liang to officiate at the prize presentation ceremony for Chinese dumpling cooking competition on the final day.
FCAS president Tan Sri Dr TC Goh led the organizing committee to pay a courtesy visit on Liang here yesterday to invite the latter as a special guest for the event.
As in previous years, the consulate is contributing RMB50,000 in support of the dragon boat race.
Goh thanked the consulate for its huge support to the federation in organizing the Chinese cultural activity.
He said FCAS was entrusted by the Sabah State Government to host the annual international dragon boat race in conjunction with the Duanwu Festival.
He said the race had attracted not only Sabah, Sarawak and West Malaysian teams, but also participants from Guangdong Province, China, the Philippines, Brunei and Indonesia.
“Last year the race saw over 100 participating teams and we are expecting the same number of participation this year.
“We hope to see more international teams competing in future races.”
Goh added that FCAS had grown into a household name in Sabah, which showed that the dragon boat race had become a much loved sports activity among the people.
Meanwhile, organizing chairlady Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen said a dragon boat team from Guangdong would be making a comeback this year after achieving quite an impressive record in the third and sixth editions of the race in 2016 and 2018 respectively.
