Tawau beach to be beautified
Member of Parliament for Tawau, Datuk Christina Liew will bring the proposal to beautify the relatively unknown Pantai Tinagat in the district to the attention of the State Government.
The scenic sandy beach, which includes a rocky stretch, borders a 150-acre piece of government land within the jurisdiction of Tawau Municipal Council (TMC).
“Pantai Tinagat has the potential to be developed into yet another tourist destination in eastern Sabah. Hopefully, there are private investors interested in transforming the place as a new tourism product,” she said after visiting the area on Tuesday.
Christina, who is also Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, was accompanied by the Tawau Parliamentary Chief Liaison Officer, Fung Thin Yein and TMC engineer Muhammad Ikhsan Wahap.
Meanwhile, the minister also met with a four-member delegation from Yukon Trading in Guangzhou Province, China, led by company representative Hermes Huang.
Huang, who was introduced by Sabah tourism player Kate Chin, said he was in Tawau in quest of palm kernel wastes, one of the key ingredients for production of animal feed by Yukon Trading in China.
Also present was the chairman of Sabah Tourism Board (STB), Ken Pan Ying On.
Earlier, Christina, who was accompanied by TMC chief engineer William Cheang, inspected the housing road and pavement that are in a state of disrepair at Taman Poh San, Jalan Bistari 2, here.
“The Tawau Municipal Council will be taking steps immediately to get the entire housing road re-surfaced to prevent further deterioration,” she assured.
Also present were Kapitan Cina Chin Chong Min and TMC councillor Vincent Fung.
The move followed complaints by affected residents, especially Soo Chee Ming, A 72-year-old retired estate supervisor, who lamented that his complaints to the previous government had fallen on deaf ears.
Relating his ordeal to the minister, Soo said he fell and hurt his right leg and nearly knocked his head on the pavement when it tilted as he was walking to his car about 6.20am last Sunday. A huge piece of the pavement had earlier fallen into the housing drain.
Christina also requested the Tawau Parliamentary Chief Liaison Officer Fung to look into improving a stretch of the village road at Batu 2, Kg Saddani that was damaged by the flash flood early this month.
