Teachers receive incentive for inventing ‘Gertik’ gripper

-

SANDAKAN: Teachers from SK Sungai Anib 3 who won a gold medal at the 30th International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition 2019 held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in early May, received incentive from Special Olympics Sandakan (SOS).

These Special Education teachers were involved in SOS’ special programmes for the mentally challenged.

The team of Nur Azwin Rosla, Shirley Liew Fui Mui, Md. Adzmin Adenin, Sallehidun Saipul, A. Bibliyana Md. Saman, Herianto Ladaci and Izrah Jumdail were winners of the Best Invention Award for inventing the “Gertik” gripper.

This unique invention was born out of a need to help autistic pupils hold a pencil properly and comfortably.

The idea for the Gertik gripper came about after a seven-yearold autistic kid refused to hold a pencil after finding it difficult to trace dotted lines during class.

“We gave the small incentive as a token of recognition for the teachers for their research and development. They have proven that their care for their special students goes far beyond the call of duty. They went to the extent of inventing an item for their students when none in the market was good enough,” said SOS chairman Taren Sunil at a fast breaking function at Hotel Sandakan.

“This innovative invention has now been patented and is being produced for the market. In fact, anyone interested may contact SO Sandakan for more details,” said Taren Sunil who can be contacted at 019-8539368.

Meanwhile, Taren Sunil said that SOS will be organising various activities for the year and asked for the support of the public.

“We were formed to cater to the needs of the mentally challenged in our society and to encourage them to be active in sports as well. Please support us,” he said.
