Repair Karamunting market call

-

SANDAKAN: Liberal Democratic Party ( LDP) Public Complaints Bureau Sandakan Division chief Robert Chong has urged the relevant authority to take immediate action to repair the facilities at Karamunting market.

He said the bureau had received numerous complaints about the market’s state of disrepair.

“There are cracks on the ground and tiles, some parts are sinking, broken pipes, missing or damaged gu er guards and many other problems that need to be fixed for the public’s safety,” he said.

Chong said the market catered for the community in the Tanah Merah, Cecily Road, Pasir Putih, Karamunting and the surrounding areas.

Since its opening in 2017, he said the Karamunting market had become a one-stop premises to shop for fresh produce at affordable price.

He added that the market is divided into three sections, namely foodstalls, vegetables and fruits, and seafood, with ample parking for consumers.

However, Chong said several accidents have occurred at the market since 2018.

“A hawker has fallen into the gu er when the guard gave way.

“There were also incidents where customers slipped and fell because of the cracks on the ground, or due to sewage water on the floor.

“These accidents should not have happened because the facilities in the market are supposed to be new.”

He urged the relevant authority to rectify the issues immediately given that more and more suppliers and vendors were doing business at the premises, while the number of customers has also grown over time.

“I hope the authority will repair the facilities as soon as possible to ensure the safety of vendors and consumers.”
