-

MIRI: The courage and bravery shown by the two policemen involved in the shootout with armed robbers at a Taman Serene Jelita house in Taman Tunku here last Thursday afternoon, where one was shot in the left arm, should be an example for all uniformed members of the force as well as the public to emulate.

Senator Alan Ling told reporters this when visiting 55-year-old Corporal William Bell Jol at Miri Hospital yesterday.

William, a 33-year veteran in the police force was shot in his upper left arm after he and his partner Constable Mohd Roni Abdul Manap, 27, engaged the masked robbers after being fired upon.

“I am very proud with the courage and the responsible attitude shown by Corporal William and his partner Constable Mohd Roni during the shootout. This courage should be emulated by others when carrying out their duty without fear or favour, as well as to stop criminal activities in this area.

“A policeman’s task is not easy. Nonetheless I hope this incident will not weaken the spirit of the police personnel but will be a motivation for them to continue to serve with dedication to eradicate criminal activities here,” Ling said.

Ling who is also PH Sarawak secretary called on the police to double their effort to track down and arrest the third suspect who is still at large and posed a danger to the public as he is armed with a gun.

“I have also informed the special function officer to the Home Minister, Datuk Dr Marzuki Mohamad of the incident so that the ministry is aware of this case,” he said adding paying close attention to local drug and crime issues, including the control of firearms should be the main priority of the police force as well.
