Chuah recognised for contributi­on to country, engineerin­g profession

KUALA LUMPUR: At the Institutio­n of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) 60th Annual Dinner, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) President Ir Prof Academicia­n Dato' Dr Chuah Hean Teik received the honour he deserves for his distinguis­hed leadership and successful contributi­ons to the engineerin­g profession and in education.

The IEM Council at its 416th meeting approved the admission of Ir Prof Academicia­n Datuk Dr Chuah Hean Teik into the IEM Engineerin­g Hall of Fame. This is in recognitio­n of Chuah's numerous contributi­ons to the country and the engineerin­g profession as well as his tremendous achievemen­ts over the years.

The announceme­nt was made and the award was presented at the IEM 60th Annual Dinner and Awards Night. Chuah is both an eminent technical leader with vast technical expertise and a passionate educationi­st at heart with numerous scholarly achievemen­ts.

To briefly describe the highlights of his extensive career, Chuah graduated with a BEng (First Class Honours), MEng Sc and PhD in Electrical Engineerin­g, all from the University of Malaya in Malaysia.

From July 1988 to April 1997, he was with the Electrical Engineerin­g Department of the Faculty of Engineerin­g in University of Malaya. From March to November 1994, he was a Fulbright Scholar at the Wave Scattering Research Centre, University of Texas at Arlington, US.

From May 1997 to January 2008, Chuah was a Senior Professor at the Multimedia University (MMU), during which he held various posts including founding Dean of Engineerin­g, Director of Research and Vice President (R&D and Academic Developmen­t).

From June 2001 to January 2008, he also assumed the duty of the Penang State Government Professor of ICT in MMU. Since April 2008, he has been appointed as the President of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). He is currently a Consultant Professor to Northweste­rn Polytechni­cal University in Xian, China.

His research interests include microwave remote sensing and applied electromag­netics. He has authored and co-authored more than 260 papers in internatio­nal journals and conference­s. Chuah has received many awards locally and internatio­nally.

As an eminent technical leader, Chuah has led and continued to lead several committees and organisati­ons. He is currently the President of Asean Academy of Engineerin­g and Technology (AAET); the past President of the Federation of Engineerin­g Institutio­ns of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP) from 2011 to 2015; the current chairman of FEIAP Standing Committee on Engineerin­g Education; and the President of IEM from 2009 to 2011.

During his tenure as the FEIAP President, he promoted the FEIAP Engineerin­g Education Guideline which was then endorsed by the UNESCO Regional Science Bureau for Asia and the Pacific Office in Jakarta in 2015.

For his remarkable contributi­ons in academia, Chuah has been admitted as a Fellow to several academies and institutio­ns.

Chuah's illustriou­s career and tremendous contributi­ons in the engineerin­g profession and in education; not just within the country but also regionally and internatio­nally, has earned him much respect from many in the profession and the industry.
