Chuah recognised for contribution to country, engineering profession

KUALA LUMPUR: At the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) 60th Annual Dinner, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) President Ir Prof Academician Dato' Dr Chuah Hean Teik received the honour he deserves for his distinguished leadership and successful contributions to the engineering profession and in education.
The IEM Council at its 416th meeting approved the admission of Ir Prof Academician Datuk Dr Chuah Hean Teik into the IEM Engineering Hall of Fame. This is in recognition of Chuah's numerous contributions to the country and the engineering profession as well as his tremendous achievements over the years.
The announcement was made and the award was presented at the IEM 60th Annual Dinner and Awards Night. Chuah is both an eminent technical leader with vast technical expertise and a passionate educationist at heart with numerous scholarly achievements.
To briefly describe the highlights of his extensive career, Chuah graduated with a BEng (First Class Honours), MEng Sc and PhD in Electrical Engineering, all from the University of Malaya in Malaysia.
From July 1988 to April 1997, he was with the Electrical Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering in University of Malaya. From March to November 1994, he was a Fulbright Scholar at the Wave Scattering Research Centre, University of Texas at Arlington, US.
From May 1997 to January 2008, Chuah was a Senior Professor at the Multimedia University (MMU), during which he held various posts including founding Dean of Engineering, Director of Research and Vice President (R&D and Academic Development).
From June 2001 to January 2008, he also assumed the duty of the Penang State Government Professor of ICT in MMU. Since April 2008, he has been appointed as the President of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). He is currently a Consultant Professor to Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xian, China.
His research interests include microwave remote sensing and applied electromagnetics. He has authored and co-authored more than 260 papers in international journals and conferences. Chuah has received many awards locally and internationally.
As an eminent technical leader, Chuah has led and continued to lead several committees and organisations. He is currently the President of Asean Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET); the past President of the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP) from 2011 to 2015; the current chairman of FEIAP Standing Committee on Engineering Education; and the President of IEM from 2009 to 2011.
During his tenure as the FEIAP President, he promoted the FEIAP Engineering Education Guideline which was then endorsed by the UNESCO Regional Science Bureau for Asia and the Pacific Office in Jakarta in 2015.
For his remarkable contributions in academia, Chuah has been admitted as a Fellow to several academies and institutions.
Chuah's illustrious career and tremendous contributions in the engineering profession and in education; not just within the country but also regionally and internationally, has earned him much respect from many in the profession and the industry.
