LAHAD DATU: Police have detained a 27-year-old husband for allegedly threatening to kill his mother with a samurai sword after being scolded for cheating on his wife.

This happened during a heated argument after a woman’s handbag was found in the suspect’s possession on Friday, district police chief ACP Nasri Mansor said yesterday.

He said the suspect surrendered himself to the district police headquarters with the samurai sword believed to be used in the incident.

Nasri said the suspect’s mother lodged a police report as she feared for her life and the others in the house at Taman Pertama Satu after the suspect threatened them about 9pm on Friday.

The mother told the police that the incident stemmed from the discovery of a woman’s handbag in his possession which sparked an argument between the suspect and his wife. The victim, who heard the quarrel, went to ask the suspect how and why the handbag was in his possession, Nasri said.

The suspect, who once worked as a water-filter technician but has been jobless for a year, became aggressive and grabbed a samurai sword from the kitchen.

He then threatened to kill everyone in the house.

However, his wife managed to calm him down and take the sword from him.

Nasri said the man’s mother contacted the police and lodged a police report as she feared for their safety.

He said investigation revealed the suspect acted aggressively after being scolded by his mother.

The suspect was staying in his mother’s house with his wife and their six children, he said.

Nasri added that the suspect was currently remanded for further investigation under Section 506 of the Penal Code.
