Fire and road safety campaign timely – Christina

TAWAU: The Fire and Road Safety Awareness Campaign is timely in view of Pesta Kaamatan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew.

“I believe this campaign will help reduce the incidence of fire and road accidents during the festive season by raising awareness of the dangers of fire and preventive measures. Its effectiveness will be reflected in the anticipated decrease of fire incidents and mishaps.

“The public should pay heed to the campaign by taking the necessary precautions to ensure an incident-free festival,” she said when launching the Fire and Rescue Department Malaysia (JBPM), Sabahlevel Fire and Road Safety Awareness Campaign at the Petronas fuel station at Batu 2, Jalan Apas, here, Saturday.

Christina, who is also the member of parliament for Tawau, commended JBPM Sabah for taking the initiative to launch the awareness campaign for the benefit of residents in the Tawau district.

Meanwhile, the director of JBPM Sabah, Kamarulzaman Malik Abdullah said statistics showed that there was an increase in the number of fire outbreaks and motor accidents during festivities in the past.

He reminded motorists and motorcyclists to refrain from using their handphones when filling their tanks at the petrol station.

“Fuels have low flash-point which can trigger a fire even if there is a small spark from a handphone,” he warned.

Also present were the deputy director of JBPM Sabah Zuraidah Latip, Tawau parliamentary chief liaison officer Fung Thin Yein and Kapitan Cina Chin Chong Min.
