SM Idris laid to rest in George Town

GEORGE TOWN: Consumers Associatio­n of Penang (CAP) president S.M. Mohamed Idris has been laid to rest at the Jalan Perak Muslim Cemetery here at 10.30 am yesterday.

The remains of Mohamed Idris, 92, were taken to Masjid Jamek Hashim Yahya for funeral prayers at 9.30am.

About 500 people including dignitarie­s, ministers, deputy ministers and representa­tives of non-government­al organisati­ons (NGOs) also paid their last respects to the late Mohamed Idris.

Among those present were Penang Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, Deputy Human Resource Minister Datuk Mahfuz Omar and state Domestic and Internatio­nal Trade and Industry, Entreprene­ur Developmen­t and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain.

Mohamed Idris' son, Mohamed Ali, 62, expressed his gratitude to all parties present to pay their last respects and assisted in his father's funeral.

Mohamed Ali said his father was not ill and fasting as usual as well as carried out his day-to-day activities such as gardening.

“He was in good health, it was just early Friday morning when he was feeling a bit tired so we took him to the Gleneagles Medical Centre, here, and he passed away at 5pm due to old age. We accept his death as fate,” he said.

Mohamed Idris is survived by a son, three daughters, seven grandchild­ren and three greatgrand­children.

Born on Dec 6, 1926, Mohamed Idris founded CAP in 1969 and was also chairman of Sahabat Alam Malaysia.

He was also a member of the George Town Municipal Council (now known as Pulau Pinang City Council) for several years from 1954.

Mohamed Idris received the Tun Abdul Razak Award on June 22, 2014 for his contributi­ons to the community and conservati­on of the environmen­t. - Bernama
