Committee dismayed over condition of BDC workshop area

-

SANDAKAN: A visit by the Highway & Public Utilities Committee (HPUC) to the BDC workshop area here revealed awful conditions there.

“The situation there was terrible and totally unacceptable,” said Taren Sunil Manoharan, Head of HPUC.

The trash strewn at the rubbish bin area is so disgusting and messy that a major cleanup effort would be needed.

“Again, it is the couldn't care less attitude of some people that is messing up the place and creating problems for others,” Taren lamented.

Pointing to the rubbish site, Taren said that if those responsible had taken just a little more effort to throw rubbish properly into the bins provided, they would have saved others a whole lot of trouble to clean up for them.

“Somehow we have to change the mindset of those responsible,” he said.

At the workshop area, vehicles were parked haphazardly. A few were left right in the middle of the road causing congestion. There were also a few derelict vehicles abandoned to rust. With weeds growing around them, they would eventually be fertile breeding grounds for rodents, mosquitoes and flies – a source of health hazard.

The HPUC team also found collapsed drains and blocked culverts.

“The drains and culverts will certainly have to be cleared and desilted,” said Taren.

Once again the HPUC members urged the public to be civic-conscious and refrain from throwing rubbish wherever they liked.

“As we have repeated countless times, the public must give full cooperation to help keep Sandakan clean. There are proper places to dispose of rubbish. Don't create a mess for others to clean up,” he pleaded.
