Fishmonger delivers free fish to customers

- By Safrah Mat Salleh

PUTATAN: Amid the current Covid-19 pandemic, there are people with hearts of gold who share their produce with others and bring a bit of relief to the community here.

A 35-year-old fishmonger, who is known by his customers as Tommy, delivered free fish to customers here in a WhatsApp group he created, which consists of 257 names.

He went to each of the customer’s houses using his fourwheel-drive vehicle along with plastics containing fish (two kilogrammes in each plastic), which were put in the vehicle, after contacting each one of them over the phone.

Tommy said he just felt like doing it with the support from his adopted brother, Juda Rashid, and was happy to make sure each customer received their portion.

He said he obtained the fish by purchasing or catching them at sea in a fishing vessel.

“We do what we can. I am doing this donation (delivering free fish) not for the sake of fame, but humanity.

“In times of need, we do what we can, save and help while we can. That is all,” said the humble and camera-shy man while asking not to disclose his real name.

When he was asked to comment on the comprehensive Economic Stimulus Package known as Prihatin, which was announced by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin recently, he said people need to be grateful and appreciate the prime minister’s sincerity in helping the people.

He emphasized that people should not depend too much on the government, instead they should do whatever they can.

Make the right saving and give to those who are really in need, he added.

The RM250 billion stimulus package was given to help Malaysians get through the economic downturn due to the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Juda, 57, said they also gave fish to some people with low income.

Juda said he realized the lack of fish in the area and claimed he heard such complaints from the people.

Therefore he called for those who have higher income to extend a helping to the people in need.

And as for the government aid, he opined there were some lacking, however, he lauded the government’s effort to help the people.

Asmah Ghazali, 58, who was one of the customers who received the free fish, praised Tommy for his kind act.

She said it was a commendable act displayed by Tommy to his customers, regardless of their race and religion.

Asmah explained that during the delivery to her house, Tommy also gave her neighbour a plastic of fish although her neighbour was not in the WhatsApp group.

As for the government’s stimulus package, she said the prime minister made a very good move to help the people.
