Man gets 10 years’ jail, three strokes for robbing convenienc­e shops

KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed man was sentenced to 10 years in jail and three strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here yesterday for robbing three convenienc­e shops and carrying out armed robbery using a machete.

Judge Suraiya Mustafa Kamal sentenced Muhammad Shafiq Mohamad, 25, after he pleaded guilty to the three charges against him.

For each of the first and second charges, the court sentenced him to three years’ imprisonme­nt and one stroke of the cane, while he got four years’ imprisonme­nt and one stroke of the cane for the third charge.

The court ordered the accused to serve all three jail sentences consecutiv­ely, with the first sentence beginning on March 6.

For the first count, the man was charged with robbing RM100 from a 7-Eleven outlet in Jalan Klang Lama here at 5.30 am on Jan 23, 2020; and for the second, he was charged with carrying out armed robbery against Ahmad Sadruddin A Hamid, 27, and obtaining, among other things, RM59.60 in cash belonging to a 7Eleven outlet in Sri Petaling here at 10.10 am, July 22, 2019.

The charges were filed under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code, punishable under the same section which provides for a maximum jail term of 14 years, with possible fine or whipping.

Muhammad Shafiq was also jointly charged with a man still at large for robbing a myNEWS.com outlet in Sungai Besi here, involving a loss of RM618.80 at 6.35 am, Nov 16, 2019, under Section 395 of the Penal Code, which is punishable under the same section with a maximum jail term of 20 years and possible whipping.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Farah Adilah Noordin requested for the sentences to be carried out separately as the offences, considered serious crimes, were committed on different dates, times and places. At the same court, a Nigerian student from a private college, Egbujor Simeon, 28, pleaded not guilty to the rape of a 27-yearold convenienc­e shop worker at a house on Jalan Kuching here at 4 pm, March 11, pursuant to Section 376 (1) of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years, with possible whipping, upon conviction.

The court denied bail to the accused and set May 8 for mention. –
