KOTA KINABALU: Christian Didier Chin is back in town as he ponders his next move in the current international tennis season.

The national number one was supposed to compete in the Egypt ITF M15 tournament earlier this month but had to cancel it following the Covid-19 pandemic.

“He was supposed to fly on March 13 and go to Egypt for four weeks but after reaching the airport at around 3am, came the news that the ITF (International Tennis Federation) tournament was cancelled until June 8.

“So, he did not travel and went back home (in Kuala Lumpur) for a week.

“We decided to bring him home to Kota Kinabalu and he is now on (self) quarantine for 14 days... today (yesterday) was his fourth day,” said Christopher, who is also his manager.

According to Christopher, the tournament was supposed to be Christian’s first following his competition at the National Circuit late February.

He said it was certainly a blow to Christian progress since they had made plans for the latter to compete in the tournament much earlier.

“Christian has been training and improving as he prepared for the start of the ITF tournaments from March onwards but for the the Covid-19 situation and then the MCO (Movement Control Order),” he said of his son who trains under Iranian coach Saeed Afzalirad.

Having said that, Christoper hoped that the situation would get better and that they would only decide in the middle of May for Christian’s next move.

Meanwhile, training continues for Christian at home during the MCO as he tries to keep himself in tip-top condition.

The 19-year-old justified his determination and commitment, where along with his father they were able to set up a makeshift tennis court at his home as he focusses both on racquet and fitness trainings.
