Politeknik KK contributes face shields to frontliners
KOTA KINABALU: In light of the Covid-19 outbreak, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu (PKK) is doing its part in helping to fight the pandemic by producing face shields for distribution to healthcare workers in Kota Kinabalu.
Its director, Zainab binti Othman in a statement said for a start, PKK had developed some 30 face shields which were distributed to the Telipok Health Clinic on Tuesday. On hand to receive the face shields was the clinic’s head, Dr Tan Yee Kin.
The face shields project was initiated by PKK’s Department of Mechanical Engineering through its lecturer, Neilson Peter Sorimpuk. According to Neilson, albeit the challenge of getting the raw materials for the shields in light of the Movement Control Order (MCO), it took him three days to complete all the 30 face shields using three 3D printers.
“It is just a small contribution, and I am happy that I can help wherever I can,” he said.
Meanwhile, Zainab said PKK will continue to produce more face shields to be distributed to healthcare workers in health clinics in Kota Kinabalu, especially those located around its campus.
“PKK will continue to produce more face shields for distribution to the clinics nearby in due course. In light of the MCO, we are restricted to go to areas that are located nearby the campus only. “We feel it is our responsibility to give our support and help where we can to our frontliners, especially the healthcare workers in Kota Kinabalu,” said Zainab.
“We hope that our small contribution will help ease the burden of our frontliners in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic,” she added.
Also present at the handing over of the face shields was Mechanical Engineering Department head Abdul Razak bin Mohd Daim.
