Kemabong aims to be main durian exporter

-

KEMABONG: It is not impossible for Kemabong to be the main exporter of durian for the state in eight years time, said its assemblyman Jamawi Jaafar.

This can be a reality when the Projek Mini Estate Sejahtera (Mesej) Kampung Batu Angalor is implemented, he said adding that durian varieties like Musang King, Duri Hitam and D24 would be among the fruits planted there.

Speaking to villagers there, Jamawi said the Mesej would involve an area of 250 acres and be planted with high production fruits including the highly prized Musang King durian, avocado and MD2 pineapples.

The project, he said would be handled by the Rural Development Ministry.

Jamawi, who is also Sabah Backbenchers Club chairman said, Kampung Batu Angalor was chosen for the project because of its topography which is suitable for agriculture.

“We thank the state government under the leadership of Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal and Rural Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick for approving and providing the allocation for the project.

“This will help improve the socioeconomy of the villagers and also encourage more of them to participate in agriculture. The Mesej project is the government’s commitment to ensure that the village progress and develop,” he said adding that with the assistance and guidance from the relevant agencies and department, the project will be a success.

At the same time, the folk in Kemabong with idle land to consider planting it with the Musang King durian as it is a lucrative crop.

The demand for the King of Fruits is high and therefore folks here should not let this opportunity to increase their income pass by, he stressed.

At the briefing, Jamawi also announced the approval of several minor projects under the state assemblyman’s fund.
