'Iron Man' scales Mt Kinabalu in aid of mountain guides
KOTA KINABALU: American superhero ‘Iron Man' made an appearance on Mount Kinabalu last weekend with food aid for the mountain guides who had been out of a job since the Movement Control Order (MCO) was implemented in March.
Together with his friends, Iron Man (Yohan Charles Jayasuriya in Cosplay) also scaled Mount Kinabalu but their journey to the summit was hampered by bad weather.
Spokesperson for the group, Dr Randolf Paza said the idea for the ‘Fund-raising climb for the Mountain Guides of Mount Kinabalu' was mooted about six weeks ago.
“We arrived at Kinabalu Park on July 3 and our team handed over the food aid for the 300 members of the mountain guide association. They were grateful for the donation as it eased their burden,” said Dr Randolf.
The following day, Dr Randolf, Yohan in the Iron Man costume, Suresh Pillai, Ramsey Denzel and Jaime Genius started their trek up the iconic mountain. They were joined by the crew of era Sabah fm, Walawd Parman (Dj Lopz), Adnan Sarippuddin (Dj Adnan), Robecca Ruth Robert (producer) and Randall Wong Wai Loon (photographer).
“We managed to reach Panar Laban (3272.7 metres) but unfortunately, we didn't make it to the summit due to the bad weather and thick fog. We did however reach the last checkpoint, Sayat Sayat (3668.10 Metres),” Dr Randolf said.
According to him, the program would not have been a success if not for the assistance of more than 50 contributors.
These people, he said, wanted to assist those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic but did not have a platform to do so.
“So we decided that we will facilitate them and organised this fund raiser,” he said.
Yohan, he added, was in the Iron Man costume throughout the two-day trek.
