Put Papar dam project on KIV – Senator

-

KOTA KINABALU: Following the June 27 extensive flash floods that hit 10 districts and affected more than 1,000 people in Sabah, Senator Datuk John Ambrose suggests that the proposed construction of Papar Dam be put on hold to pave way for the rehabilitation of irrigation facilities and clearing of clogged rivers.

“I am suggesting to our Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Aqdal to put the Papar dam project on KIV and use portion of the budget to improve our irrigation facilities and clearing of clogged rivers which were identified as major contributing factors of the recent flash floods in Sabah,” the Bersatu Penampang Division chief said.

John said flash flood victims in Penampang and other districts suffered tremendously when their areas submerged underwater due to the 18-hour non-stop heavy rains eight days ago.

“Flash flood victims suffered sleepless nights, anxiety and damaged of personal properties which could have been avoided if only rivers are not clogged,” he added.

Hence, John finds it proper and logical for the State government to divert the funds of the Papar dam to immediately address the defective irrigation system and river mouths, including clearing drains.

Since the RM3 billion dam project is facing objections from residents of Papar and Penampang districts, including other controversial issues, the Senator finds it appropriate to use the said budget to safeguard the interest and welfare of Sabahans vulnerable to flash floods. “Addressing the flash flood problem should be given priority although I also believe that the realisation of the controversial Papar dam will also be beneficial to everybody, especially ensuring suffient electricity and water supplies in the future,” he said.
