SGA to revamp Sukma golf squad

Sabah Golf Association (SGA) will look to revise, if not revamp, its training programmes due to the postponement of the 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Johor to 2022.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Golf Association (SGA) will look to revise, if not revamp, its training programmes due to the postponement of the 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Johor to 2022.

President of SGA, Datuk Peter Khoo made the remark after taking into consideration the fact that by 2022, the current junior Sukma trainees may change their age grouping or other personal circumstances.

“All preparation works which have been undertaken by SGA Junior Development Committee and their coaches in conjunction with the Ministry of (Youth and) Sports will have to be drastically revised, if not revamped.

“As a result, SGA will have to “disband” the current Sukma golf squad and revised our criteria and strategy in the year 2021 in the selection and qualification of the 2022 Sabah Sukma golf squad,” he said in a statement yesterday.

According to Khoo, SGA also believed that its Junior

Development Committee’s training programmes working under close cooperation with the coaches should be able to enlist a new 2022 Sukma squad by the third quarter of 2021.

He said with so much “extra time” available, SGA will also ensure that the new Sukma squad will be well prepared and resilient in the quest for excellence in the 20th Sukma in 2022.

“Our training system will expose our junior golfers to more tournaments in Sabah and overseas as the opportunity arises.

“SGA will put in place an interactive system to determine “order of merits” amongst not only the current group of junior golfers but to gather in other up-and-coming talents from all golf clubs throughout Sabah.

“Once we are able to scout a new group of junior golfers, competitive tournaments will be organised as part of the centralised training programme which may take place from the third quarter of 2021,” he added.

Meanwhile, SGA will be holding discussion with local clubs for the purpose of introducing SGA Junior Membership so as to reach out to more junior participation in the state as part of the overall Junior Development Programme of SGA.

“We strive to work hand in hand with our member clubs and MSN (Sabah Sports Council) to achieve the best results in Junior Golf Development in Malaysia,” concluded Khoo.
