Heriot-Watt University celebrates 200th Anniversary
PUTRAJAYA: Heriot-Watt University celebrated its bicentennial anniversary in conjunction with its Global Watt Day, in a virtual event at its Malaysia campus held with its Malaysia school members and staff, yesterday.
During the event, the university re-affirmed its ongoing commitment in supporting the global recovery efforts in relation to Covid-19, focusing on research and relevant learning by pioneering online and Responsive Blended Learning approaches to inspire their graduates to be ambitious, resilient and enterprising through its Positive Education approach.
The FutureMade university with a global presence in
143 countries has both an international and local outlook, making it one of the most diversified United Kingdom (UK) universities to date. This year, the university celebrated this remarkable milestone with its campuses in Scotland, Malaysia and Dubai, with its global school members, students, and alumni. In his welcoming speech, provost and chief executive officer of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM), Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi shared that over the past 200 years, Heriot-Watt University has firmly established itself as the world’s first mechanics institute in the heart of
Edinburgh, making it the eighth oldest higher education institute in the United Kingdom.
“We all take great pride to belong to a university with such a formidable track record of nurturing generations of bright FutureMade graduates; and all of us here have the privilege of continuing this legacy of shaping our future, shaping tomorrow, together.
“This is our opportunity to look forward and showcase our ambitions for the future. I would also like to share that this yearlong celebration provides us with an opportunity to strengthen our bonds with global communities/ campuses, enabling us to create a clear and coherent global identity,” he said.
Al-Atabi also shared the university’s history dates back to 1821, with an extensive and acclaimed tradition of being outward looking in pursuit of knowledge that benefits the community it serves and the world at large. He also explained the origins of the university’s name, which was attributed to renowned Scottish engineer and inventor - the father of the first industrial revolution, James Watt.
