Sibu folk not taking Covid-19 seriously

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting has chastised those from the local business community for not taking the current Covid-19 situation seriously.

He wrote this on his Facebook update yesterday, following observation of people queuing up at the central police station here to apply for permits that would facilitate travelling to and back from work as operations under the essential services, during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period in Sibu, which is in force until Jan 29.

The permit requirement takes effect today.

Under MCO, the essential services sector covers manufacturing, construction, services, distribution and trade, as well as plantation and commodities – all are allowed to open for operations, but with only 30 per cent attendance of the management team, while the number of workers should be determined by the implementation of physical distancing and set public health protocols at the workplace.

“Despite the drizzle and the Covid19 threat, the Sibu public braved the elements to apply the police permit.

“They could have stayed at home, and not venture out and face the dangers of Covid-19; but they decided to apply (for the permit).

“This clearly shows that many do not think this Covid-19 is serious.

“They are willing to take the risk to continue opening their business,” wrote Ting.

The application for the police permit opened on Monday, and apart from the central station, they can also be done at Lanang, Sungei Merah, and Sibu Jaya police stations.
