Aid for 15,500 families affected by floods, MCO in Beluran
BELURAN: A total 15,500 families affected by floods and the Movement Control Order (MCO) in the Beluran parliamentary constituency here will be assisted through Mafi Prihatin, a programme under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (Mafi).
Its minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee said the constituency, involving the Sugut, Telupid and Labok state seats, would be the first area under the programme in Sabah, since it was launched on January 21.
‘’This programme is a joint effort of various agencies under Mafi, the Beluran parliamentary office and the offices of the State Assemblies.
“We strive to distribute to other districts in Sabah as well because this programme is continuous. Funds will also be collected so that more people who were impacted will benefit,” he said.
Kiandee, who is also Beluran Member of Parliament, was talking to reporters after the handing over of Mafi Prihatin flood aid here yesterday.
A total of 106 members of the Beluran Farmers Organisation (PPK) from three villages received the aid in the forms of rice and dry food items worth RM23,000 during the ceremony.
The villages were Kampung Pinangkau, Kampung SungaiSungai and Kampung Kelagan Jaya.
Besides the Farmers Organisation Authority (LPP), the other agencies participating in the programme in Beluran were the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA), Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi), Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM), National Farmers Organisation (Nafas) and the Integrated Agricultural Development Area (IADA).
Kiandee also handed over a four-wheel-drive vehicle in conjunction with the Prihatin Rakyat Economic Stimulus Package under the Food Mobilisation and Logistics Boosting Programme to the Beluran PPK.
He also said Mafi was evaluating losses suffered by farmers due to floods nationwide, adding that RM80 million was allocated to Mafi as natural disaster fund under the 12th Malaysia Plan.
