Man arrested for beating, causing injury to sister

SIBU: A 44-year-old unemployed man has been arrested by the police for allegedly beating his older sister, causing her to be paralysed from the chest down.

Sibu police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said that the suspect was arrested on Monday at 2.10pm following a report lodged by his 71-yearold mother on the same day.

He said that the incident happened on Jan 22 at the upper floor of their double-storey house at Jalan Sungai Antu here at about 3pm.

“The siblings got involved in an altercatio­n a er the 49-year-old victim refused to give money to the suspect.

“She became agitated when he constantly asked for money. She took a broom stick and beat the suspect.

“The suspect retaliated and snatched the stick and beat the victim repeatedly on her head, body and back until she fell on the floor.

“The complainan­t who heard them went up and saw the victim being struck by the suspect using the stick which broke into pieces,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said the suspect dashed out from the house a er being instructed by the complainan­t to stop his act.

The victim was later taken to Sibu Hospital in an ambulance, he added.

He also said that the siblings had been at loggerhead­s for a long time and o en quarrelled though no physical injuries were caused.

“A doctor at the hospital confirmed the victim sustained C5/C6 vertebrae subluxatio­n which affects the spinal cord.

“The victim who is still warded will undergo spinal surgery tomorrow (Feb 3). However, the percentage of recovery is only one per cent,” he said.

He added police will apply for the suspect to be remanded and refer the case to the Welfare Department to obtain Interim Protection Order for the victim.

The case is being investigat­ed under Section 326A of the Penal Code.

Stanley also confirmed that the victim was the same woman who was compounded RM1,000 for violating the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) for refusing to wear a face mask while shopping at a pharmacy at Jalan Kampung Nyabor here on Oct 3 last year.

A video of the incident which went viral showed the woman get into a rage and u er racist remarks a er being called ‘auntie’ by the pharmacy employees who advised her to put on a face mask to enter the premises.
