1,000 bags of rice distributed via drive-through
TAWAU: More than 1,000 people turned up to collect their share in a drive-through rice distribution exercise initiated by Tawau Member of Parliament Datuk Christina Liew in view of the Movement Control Order 2.0 (MCO 2.0) on Sunday.
For the purpose, a tent was specially set up at Kongsi 10, Jalan Sin Onn Tiku in the Balung state constituency.
The former Deputy Chief Minister said the public response was so overwhelming that they had no choice but to turn away at least 300 people because they had run out of rice supplies.
“Shortly after we had started, a long line of about 500 cars began to gather along the road, stretching almost five kilometres away from the collection centre.
“We apologised to those who did not get the free rice (5kg) this time, and told them to come early in future when we have another programme.
“By the end of the day, we had given out 1,000 bags. This brings to a total of 2,000 bags of rice, including those handed out to mosques, suraus, churches and temples in the Tawau parliamentary constituency over the weekend,” Liew said.
On hand to assist were the Tawau PKR team and personnel from the Tawau Parliamentary People’s Service Centre.
Also present were the chief liaison officer Fung Thin Yein and liaison officer Robert Penggai.
According to Liew, some 4,500 packs were delivered to Tawau folks during the MCO 1.0 period last year.
The Tawau parliamentary constituency covers the state seats of Sri Tanjung, Apas and Balung.
