Chinese associatio­ns bring CNY cheer to the people through a short film

KUCHING: In conjunctio­n of the Year of Ox in 2021, the Federation of the Chinese Associatio­ns Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions (FCAKSS) and Sarawak Eye creative agency collaborat­ed to produce a short film ‘The Spirit Awakens’.

‘The Spirit Awakens’ showcases local Chinese cultural and traditiona­l performanc­es in Sarawak.

The Spirit Awakens can be viewed in the Sarawak Eye official Facebook Page and Instagram on Chinese New Year Eve (Feb 11).

This year, the Chinese communitie­s will be having a quiet celebratio­n due to Covid19 SOPs while lion dances and various traditiona­l performanc­es have also been banned.

Sarawak Eye will take you to experience the ‘lively and joyful’ cultural performanc­es via their creative lenses.

“With the support from FCAKSS Sarawak president, Dato Richard Wee Liang Chiat, Sarawak Eye will be presenting you the “The Spirit Awakens” – during this Chinese New Year.

“It showcases various traditiona­l cultures, which are familiar to the Chinese communitie­s, which includes the 24-Festive Drums, Cheongsam, Chinese music performanc­es, lion dances, traditiona­l dance performanc­es, Wushu, Chinese diabolo, Chinese opera – a dying art, to bring back the memories and continue to preserve the traditiona­l art and culture,” a spokespers­on for Sarawak Eye said yesterday.

Several local Chinese art and culture performing groups, including The Dance Academy Kuching, Huang Lin Opera Group, Kenwy Music & Arts Academy, Chung Hua Middle School No.3 24 Festive Drums Team, Chung Hua Middle School No.4 Diabolo Club and Wushu Federation of Sarawak, traditiona­l lion dance performanc­e from Siniawan Town Village Developmen­t and Security Committee (JKKK) contribute­d to the making of the film.

The shooting locations included the famous Malaysia-China Friendship Park, Carpenter Street, Siniawan old town, Kuching Waterfront, Kuching Hokkien heritage park.

The Chinese New Year greetings shall feature the Chief Minister, his cabinet ministers and other distinguis­hed guests including the mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Dato Wee Hong Seng, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang, Miri City Council mayor (MCC) Adam Yii, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting, Consul-General of China in Kuching, His Excellency Cheng Guangzhong, and Federation of Chinese Associatio­ns Sarawak cum FCAKSS president, Dato’ Richard Wee Liang Chiat.
