Two more deaths in S’wak, 133 new cases

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 133 new Covid-19 cases yesterday along with two more deaths in Sibu.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in its daily update said the latest developmen­t raised the cumulative number of infections in the state to 8,297 and deaths to 76.

It said the 75th death involved a 41-year-old man who was receiving treatment in Sibu Hospital.

“He had experience­d symptoms such as fever and cough for a few days before getting early treatment and screening for Covid-19.

“He was found to be positive on Feb 8 and his condition gradually deteriorat­ed and he was confirmed to have passed away on Feb 22,” it said in a statement.

On the 76th death, SDMC said it involved a 74-year-old man who was admitted to Sibu

Hospital after he tested positive for Covid-19 from close-contact tracing.

“The case did not exhibit any prior signs or symptoms of Covid-19. His health condition worsened and he passed away on Feb 23,” it said, adding the case had Parkinson’s disease and was linked to the Geronggang Cluster in Sibu.

On the breakdown of new cases, the committee said 36 were recorded in Meradong followed by Sibu (28), Betong (17), Samarahan (13), Kuching (12), Bintulu (8), Julau (6), Subis (6), Miri (3), and one each in Saratok, Kanowit, Beluru and Dalat.

Thirty-five of the new cases in

Meradong involved the Sungai Bakong Cluster while one was an individual screened during active case detection (ACD).

Sibu’s new cases were detected through ACD (17), individual screening (6), symptomati­c screening (4), and one from the Pasai Cluster (1), while all 17 in Betong were from the newlydecla­red Jalan Muhibbah Cluster.

For Samarahan, six of its new cases involved the Emperoh Jambu Cluster, four from the Univista Cluster, and three from ACD.

Kuching’s 12 new cases comprised four from the Emperoh Jambu Cluster, one from the Sungai Maong Cluster, two from ACD, and five from individual screening.

In Bintulu, three cases were from ACD while the Rakut Cluster and Kidurong Dua Cluster registered two and one case respective­ly. Another case was from the screening of a symptomati­c individual while another involved a returnee from Labuan.

All six new cases in Julau were from the Nanga Lijan Cluster, while the six cases in Subis, three in Miri, and one in Kanowit and Saratok were all detected through ACD.

The sole new case in Dalat and Beluru were from the Pasai

Cluster and Seruas Cluster, respective­ly.

Meanwhile, SDMC reported 214 new Covid-19 recoveries throughout the state, involving 149 at Sibu Hospital, 34 at Kapit quarantine and treatment centre (PKRC), 15 at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), eight at Miri Hospital, five at Sarikei Hospital, two at Bintulu Hospital, and one at Sri Aman PKRC.

The number of active cases under treatment in hospitals across the state stood at 2,092, with 1,043 in Sibu Hospital, 313 in SGH, 239 in Miri Hospital, 220 in Bintulu Hospital, 170 in Kapit Hospital PKRC, 81 in Sarikei Hospital, and 26 in Sri Aman PKRC.
