Brunei woman arrested in Lawas after high speed chase

MIRI: Lawas police arrested a Bruneian woman yesterday after a high speed car chase for abour 38km from the Immigratio­n, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Merapok to Lawas town.

Lawas district police chief DSP Roslan Leman when contacted said in the 10.30am incident, the police also had to fire a few gun shots at the 28-year-old suspect’s vehicle during the chase.

“The shots were fired at the suspect’s tyre to ensure that she could not flee,” said Roslan.

A police vehicle was damaged but no one was injured in the incident.

According to him, the suspect who is from Kampung Benatik, Brunei had earlier on entered Lawas through Mengkalap ICQS from Temburong in Brunei and had driven until Merapok and entered Sindumin in Sabah before decided to turn back to ICQS Merapok.

Roslan said when the suspect turned back, she crashed into the ICQS Merapok, forcing the police who were on duty at the border to chase after the suspect.

After about 30 minutes of the high speed chase, the suspect was later apprehende­d at a traffic light in Lawas town.

“Initial investigat­ion revealed that the reason why suspect drive all the way to Sindumin was to look for entertainm­ent,” said Roslan.

Further check found that the suspect did not have a passport with her except for her Brunei Identity Card.

Roslan said the police are investigat­ing the case under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructin­g public servant in dischargin­g his public functions.
